LOZ: Hero of Masks Chapter 1

Intro: every year in Hyrule, when the moon completely blocks the sun; everyone joins at Hyrule Castle to celebrate a special event known as the Mask Festival. The Mask Festival is the event where 7 children from each well known race play musicals instruments together as a group representing the peace treaty between each race and their lands whilst they wear masks representing their lands. The races are known as Hylian, Kokiri, Deku, Goron, Zora, Sheikah and Gerudo; and it was only a week until the next festival, and they were missing one more child for the group, but little did they know

Was that an evil being is lurking in the shadows

Chapter 1: The Boy's Birth Mark

In the peaceful land of Kokiri Forest, there was a lone tree house, and in that lone tree house, was a 12 year old Kokiri boy sleeping comfortable in his bed holding his fairy like a small teddy bear. This boy was known as Link and his fairy partner Navi, it wasn't long before a small light emitted from Link's window and began to shine through it and onto Link's eyes

Link moaned tiredly as he turned over facing away from the light, but unfortunately, the light still shined on his face; Link slowly began to wake up. He slowly sits up giving off a cute yawn, he removes the blanket sheet revealing his light green tunic, he then gets out of bed and places on his brown boots, walks up to his bowl of water and splashed his face to wake himself up

He then walks up to a small pole which held his belt and pointed hat; he soon puts them both on and was about to walk out his door until he noticed Navi still sleeping in his bed; Link knew he wasn't allowed to be far from his fairy. So he slowly scoops her up into his hands and he places Navi into his hat and then walked outside

Later in the forest; Link took out his hand made bow and Deku Sticks which were carved to make sharp points much like arrows. Link then prepares his bow, shoots a Deku arrow at an apple from a tree and it falls down into Link's hand. Then Link began to eat his apple for breakfast, just then, Navi quickly flew out of Link's hat

Navi: (yawns) morning Link

Link: morning Navi… beautiful day isn't it?

Navi: sure is

Just when Link was about to bite into his apple again, he noticed the other Kokiri children running towards the entrance to where the Great Deku Tree resides, and all their expressions looked as if they were in a panic

Link: what's going on!?

Link puts away his bow and runs with the other Kokiris. As Link and the other Kokiris arrived at the Great Deku Tree's area, they noticed the Deku Tree's look of distressed

Kokiri 1: Great Deku Tree!! what's going on!?! All the entrance ways to leave the forest have been blocked by thorny roots acting like a wall!!

Kokiri 2: yeah! We can't leave the forest and the people for the Mask Festival are coming soon!!

Deku Tree: calm down! I'm aware of this! it's the fabled Kokiri Shrine! Its been invaded by a being of darkness! If the Kokiri Shrine is not purified, then this entire forest will be corrupted by plant-like monsters!

Kokiri 3: what should we do!?

Deku Tree: someone must go to the Kokiri Shrine and defeat this being in combat; the Shrine is very sensitive to anything that contains evil magic… however, this being of darkness… I sense that it is far too powerful for any mortal man to slay in combat

Link then noticed Saria, his long time best friend looking worried

Saria: if we can't perform at the Mask Festival, we could be accused for betrayal to Hyrule! And we could all die by these monsters! Oh what do we do!?!?

Then Link noticed Mido, the self appointed Kokiri leader, Link's rival, and the chosen one to be performing at the Mask Festival; Link wanted to perform at the festival though so he's a little jealous of Mido there

Mido: you said any mortal man! What about us children!? Maybe not one, but two or three could take it down

Deku Tree: Mido? Are you suggesting we build an army out of unarmed children!? We only have two weapons

Link: maybe so, but we also have Deku Nuts and sticks!

Saria: Link is right!!! And Link also has his handmade bow!

Navi: and we fairy guardians can detect the enemy's weak point

Deku Tree: …………… alright… but be careful

Mido: ok! As leader of the Kokiris! I call dibs on the mightiest weapon of all!

Link: "self appointed" leader!

Mido: shut it Link! And give Link the lamest weapon we got

Link: no thanks, I have my bow and wooden arrows

Saria: I guess that leaves me with this second weapon huh?

Deku Tree: Link! Mido! Saria! I wish you the greatest of luck, and I also wish for your safe return!

A little later, Mido obtained the Kokiri sword and a wooden shield, Link prepared his wooden bow and arrows and Saria was holding the Gale Boomerang, an enchanting boomerang that can call upon the winds to aid the user. They all arrived at an entranceway which will take them to the Kokiri Shrine, they then turned back to look at the Great Deku Tree

Deku Tree: be careful, and please come back safely… and hurry… the people for the Mask Festival are beginning to enter the forest, I can sense it

Saria: but how!? The entranceways are blocked by thorny roots

Deku Tree: true… but that doesn't mean the roots are not slayable by blades

The three realised what that meant and they dashed into the entranceway

Meanwhile; there were six children walking through the entranceway to Lost Woods; one was a young Hylian girl with long red hair and a yellow dress who was cutting the thorny roots with a small sword her father gave her; her name was Malon, next to her was a white haired male Sheikah child wearing black and light grey armour, he was the son of the famous Impa, Zareb; he was also cutting the thorny bushes

Behind the two were the remaining four children of the Mask Festival. One was a young Deku girl wearing a dress made of leaves and had long hair in the form of a ponytail, her name was Dahlia, the Deku princess. Behind her was a young Goron boy with spiky red hair and eyebrows, he was also wearing a white vest and wore a kilt, he was the Scottish Goron child Scott

Next to Scott was the Gerudo girl, she wore a harem like dress and has long red flowing hair, she also had tanned skin like an other Gerudo, her name was Nabooru. Finally, in front of Nabooru was the Zora girl, the odd one out because she never wanted to perform in the Mask Festival, she was also the second princess in the group, her name was Princess Ruto, she was known to be the most stubborn princess of all time

As the group continued to walk through the forest cutting thorny roots in silence, Malon was the one who broke the silence

Malon: so who's this Kokiri we have to look for

Zareb: I think his name is Mido, the leader of the Kokiris

Malon: Mido huh? So not the other one?

Nabooru: what other one?

Malon: about 2 months ago during the Kokiri Festival, I met a Kokiri named Link who planted a Deku sprout near our ranch

Ruto: so? Kokiris plant Deku sprouts every where, there's one outside my home Zora's domain

Malon: yeah, but this Kokiri was different. He had big expressive blue eyes, shiny blonde hair and a sweet smile! Oh man!!! He looked so adorable!!!!!!

Everyone looked at Malon like she said something weird

Malon: but its mostly his big blue eyes! They looked like shining sapphires when you move them into the sun light

Ruto: so lemme get this straight, you like this Link boy because he has big blue eyes

Malon: pretty much

Scott: (thick Scottish accent) y'know you should never go with a lad just by mere appearance, you should go by what they're capable of and personality

Zareb: Scott's right, you'll be surprised how much the good looking guys can be real jerks and the ugly looking ones are the best

Malon: oh I couldn't be with him anyway… he's a Kokiri

Ruto: um… so?

Nabooru: Kokiris can't grow up, they all stay at the age of 12

Ruto: … r-really!?! Kids forever!?

Dahlia: yep, that's why Kokiris are usually the lead musicians; not only do they never grow up, but they only leave the forest twice a year. One for the Kokiri festival, and one for the Mask Festival, so its like a little gift for them since they remain in one place for so long whereas the rest of the races can roam freely whenever we like

Ruto: oh… sucks to be them, but I guess eternal youth is a pretty cool upside to have

Scott: aye… but they'll never know the true glory and respect of becoming a man!!

Zareb: that's not important now anyway, what's important is where are all these thorny roots coming from!? Is the forest trying to keep us out!?!

Malon: hey yeah? Zareb has a point!

Meanwhile; Link, Mido and Saria made it inside the Kokiri shrine, the walls were made of a light grey stone where vines latches themselves onto in a sort of pattern of beauty, the walls were also carved to represent children, most likely Kokiris, some of the images represented large trees with moustaches and eyes, they were definitely images of all the Deku Trees throughout time

But one image stood from the rest of them was a large monkey image wearing a tunic, in its left hand was a sword with a similar hilt to the Kokiri sword Mido has, and in its right hand was a Deku shield, and above it was a strange looking patterned ocarina

Mido: what the heck is that?

Just then, Navi the fairy flew out of Link's hat and began to examine the image; then Navi quickly flew back to the three in excitement

Navi: oh wow!!! I can't believe there's an image of him in this very shrine, this shrine must've been in honour of him

Just then, Mido and Saria's fairies flew out in confusion

Link: so who is it?

Navi: it's the all powerful Kokorshin!!!

Saria: d-Kokorshin!?

Navi: Kokorshin is one of the 7 Masked Guardians of Hyrule that work under the Triforce goddess! Kokorshin was the Masked Guardian of the Forest… long ago… when the world was born from the goddess, Kokorshin was born to protect the forest using his courage and determination; he brought forth many beautiful plants and trees, his greatest work was the Great Deku Trees… which in turn, created Kokiri Forest and the children of the forest as well to make sure the plant life of Hyrule, would remain full of life and prosperity

Link: wow!! So the Great Deku Tree and us Kokiris were created by a Masked Guardian monkey

Mido: who knew, and I wonder why the Great Deku Tree never told us of this before?

Navi: who knows. But right now we have to purify this shrine before the children of the Mask Festival come

Mido: oh yeah, I so don't wanna miss my spotlight in Hyrule

Link knew Mido's arrogant tone was being used to taunt him, but he just ignored it as he and the others began to walk deeper into the shrine

Back to the other children of the Mask Festival; they had finally arrived in Lost Woods, unfortunately there were even more thorny roots here than in the entranceway. So not only did Malon and Zareb cut the roots with their blades, Dahlia swung her hair acting like a blade which sliced a huge amount of roots, Scott yanked the roots out with his bare hands, Nabooru used her large sword and Ruto used her blade-like fins to cut the roots

Nabooru: seriously!? what's going on!?

Malon: well once we reach Kokiri Forest! We'll know the answer!!

Suddenly a huge army of thorny roots shot up from the ground and aimed itself towards the children; that was until Scott ignited his fist and threw an almighty flaming punch into the roots destroying them and turning them into dust

Scott: now lets get a move on!!!

Just then, the six children ran towards a second entranceway which was also blocked by thorny roots until Nabooru cut them down and the ran through.

Finally, after going through a long tunnel way of thorny roots, they reached Kokiri Forest unharmed. As the children looked around, they noticed that none of the Kokiris were around

Ruto: well where are they?

Scott: they have to be somewhere

Just then, they noticed a Kokiri child peeking out of the entranceway to the Great Deku Tree

Kokiri: they're here!!!!

The Kokiri ran into the entranceway. The confused children, then followed the Kokiri to the entrance of the Great Deku Tree; when they arrived, they were surprised to see all the children and the Great Deku Tree himself standing in all its majesty

Ruto: hey! what's with all these roots trying to kill us!? I'm a princess of the Zoras!!

Dahlia: I hope you aren't planning a betrayal to the kingdom of Hyrule

Deku Tree: forgive me young children… but I'm afraid this is not my doing

Scott: and what do you mean by that?

Soon the Deku Tree explained everything to the Mask Festival children and hoe Link, Saria and Mido are going to stop this evil being in the Kokiri Shrine

Back to Link, Saria and Mido, they easily destroyed the minor plant monsters using Link's wooden arrows, Saria's gale Boomerang and Mido's Kokiri sword. Eventually they reached the final door, behind that door lied the dark being that corrupted the shrine

Mido: ok! Its time for the great Mido to slay this beast! And once I do, I'll get ready for the my spotlight in the Mask Festival

Link ignored what Mido said, instead he gulped slightly, for some unknown reason he could sense that this being was far superior than anything else he will encounter

Link: n-Navi…

Navi: yeah?

Link: I…… I suddenly feel scared

Mido and Saria overheard this

Mido: well if you wanna chicken out and let me take care of this loser being then so be it

Saria: Mido! The Great Deku Tree did say that this being was far superior than any mortal man… so stop being so overconfident! We need to tread carefully against this foe

Mido: … whatever

Soon Mido opened the door and the three Kokiris walked in. They were in some sort of dark dank area, the walls were surrounded by thorny roots much like the ones that blocked the entranceways

And in the middle of the room, was a tall 7th human shaped being, this being made Link's spine shiver, he could sense an incredible power in him. The most intimidating part of this being, was that it was coated in thick black armour and had a 5ft sword which was also 2ft in width, it looked more like a club but it still looked sharp enough to cut anything

Link looked and noticed Mido and Saria looked nervous too, Link was glad he wasn't the only one. Just then, the being in black armour turned around facing the Kokiris. The being then took three steps forward and prepared its huge sword and black shield

Overpowered Armoured Being

Darknut

The Darknut quickly charged towards the Kokiris swinging its huge sword at them, but before the Darknut could harm the kids, they quickly dodged out of the way in three different directions. Link quickly prepared his bow and arrows, he then fires a wooden bow at the Darknut, but all it did was snap against this thick armour dealing not even a scratch

Link: oh no!

Suddenly the Darknut slowly began to walk towards Link as he shot more wooden arrows at it dealing no damage at all. Link also began to step back quickly feeling nervous

Link: its no good! Its armour's too stro-

Before Link could finish, the Darknut swung its sword clashing with the side of Link sending him flying into a pillar and dropping his bow; Link was trying to get up but was already greatly injured

Saria: LINK!!!!!

Just then, the Darknut turned around and began to run towards Saria; but that was until Mido jumped in the way and began to attack the Darknut with the Kokiri sword, unfortunately he wasn't even doing a single scratch on his armour, but the arrogant Kokiri wasn't taking any notice to how much damage he was doing

Mido: ha!! Link's dumb sticks are nothing compared to the almighty Kokiri sword!

Mido was quickly smacked away by the Darknut's sword, he smacked into the wall and fell already too injured to move. Then the Darknut swung his sword smacking Saria into another wall

Link: SARIA!!!!!!

Link then suddenly jumped back up and ran towards the Darknut, he then jumped onto the Darknut's back and began to futilely punch the Darknut in the head

Link: leave her alone!!!!

Just then, the Darknut grabbed Saria by the neck and threw her into another wall, then he grabbed Link by his face and threw him down onto the ground in front of it hard, and before Link could even budge, he was quickly smacked away by the Darknut's sword once more into a wall

Just then, Mido got back up and was about to attack the Darknut again until the Darknut smacked him away again into the wall where Saria was injured. Just then, Link slowly got back up

Link: unbelievable!! No matter what we do, we can't even make him budge!!!

Navi: and the worst part is… I can't sense any weak points in the monster, its as is its invincible

Saria: Link!!! Catch!!!!

Suddenly Saria threw her Gale Boomerang towards Link and he quickly caught it; he then stands up and throws the Gale Boomerang at the Darknut attempting to throw it off guard, but it didn't do anything, as Link caught the Gale Boomerang as it came back, he quickly dodges the Darknut's sword attack, unfortunately the Darknut quickly kicks Link in the ribs still sending him into a wall

Link slowly got up with the taste of blood in his mouth, he knew he couldn't take much more of this; he then noticed the Darknut walking towards Saria and Mido. Just then, Link panicked as he just ran towards the Darknut and rammed himself into it, only to hurt his own arm, just then the Darknut grabbed Link's head, threw him in between Saria and Mido and the Darknut quickly smacked all three of them at once with his sword and into a pillar causing it to break apart

The three children slowly got up noticing the Darknut slowly walking towards them. Just then, Link took out the Gale Boomerang and threw it into the pillar rocks, picking them up with its wind and smacking them into the Darknut, which actually caused it to stumble back

Link found this idea useful as he began to repeat the process rapidly until the Darknut was actually backed into a wall. Link was about to do this plan one last time, but unfortunately he ran out of rocks from the broken pillar to use

Link: drat! That was working so far!!!

Mido: this guys unstoppable!!!

Saria: w-what do we do!?!?

Mido: h-here!!!!

Suddenly Mido handed Link his Kokiri sword and Deku shield

Mido: you're a better swordsman than I am!

Link: you can't be serious!!!! What makes you think I can even harm him!?!?!?!

Mido: how should I know!?!?! I'm just giving you those weapons because I know you'll do a better job than I can!!!!

Link: your just giving me these because your too scared to fight him!!!!

Mido: we all are!!!!!!!!!

Link: grrr…. And your giving these weapons to me so you can cower behind me too!!!!

Saria: here he comes!!!!!

Suddenly the Darknut began to walk closer to them as Mido ran off

Link: YOUR A COWARD MIDO!!!!!!!!!

Darknut: it is useless! Just drop your weapons and give me the enjoyment of destroying you pathetic children slowly and painfully

Navi: it can talk!?!

Link: I'LL NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Just then, Link charged towards the Darknut and began to attack it with his new sword futilely; just then the Darknut swung his sword at Link but he quickly blocks with the Deku shield. But…

Suddenly the wooden shield broke on Link's arm causing a huge amount of splinter wounds and the Darknut's sword still smacked into Link sending him into a wall, but Link quickly got up and charged towards the Darknut once more, but without a shield, he could not truly defend himself

Saria: Link! Stop fighting!! We have to flee!!! We cannot win!!!!

Mido peeks from behind a pillar watching Link futilely attack the Darknut with the Kokiri sword

Mido: that guys invincible!!! Just run you idiot!!!!!!

Just then, Link was quickly picked up by the Darknut and was thrown into the ground in front of the Darknut, as the dust cleared, Link was incredibly injured, blood was seeping out of his mouth and he was bruised everywhere

Link: (cough) I'll…… n-n…… never… give up… too… much…… I-is at… risk…… the… Mask… Festival… o-our… home… is… in danger!

Darknut: pitiful…

Suddenly the Darknut slammed his boot into Link's chest causing him to scream in agonizing pain as blood splattered out of his mouth

Saria: LIIINK!!!!!!!!!

Mido shivered in fear as he heard the blood curdling scream the young Kokiri child gave out, just then the Darknut move his foot off Link. Then the Darknut shot his sword under Link, swinging it up causing Link to fly up and hit the ceiling and was about to hit the ground hard until-

The Darknut smashed its sword directly into the falling Link's head causing him to be sent forward smacking into a wall so hard he caused a crater in the wall, then Link fell onto the ground on his back, with the Kokiri sword still in his right hand

His eyes were closed and he wasn't moving… he wasn't even breathing

Saria: L-LIIINK NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Navi: LIIINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saria busted into tears, Mido even shed some tears, Link had tried his best to save not only their forest, but Saria… he even tried to save Mido. Navi began to knock herself onto Link trying to wake him up

Navi: Link!!! C'mon get up!!!!! You can't die!!!! You just can't!!!!

Mido: I……… I was such a coward!!!! I should've stood by Link!!!!!

Saria: Link! … please don't be dead!!!

Saria was about to run towards Link until the Darknut quickly shot its sword in front of Saria preventing her

Darknut: don't bother wasting your breath on that pathetic child, he got what he deserved for trying to face me!!! And now you and your spineless friend will suffer the same fate

Suddenly the Darknut smacked Saria into the wall where Mido was and the Darknut slowly began to walk up to the remaining two Kokiri children to finish them off

Just then. In Link's mind, everywhere was pitch black as Link was just floating there with his eyes still closed, soon his eyes opened weakly

Link: …… no… I… I cannot be dead…… there's too much at risk … is this really the end for me? ……Saria…… Navi…… Great Deku Tree…… and my friends…… I've failed you all

Link looked at his right hand and noticed his unusual triangular birthmark, it was in the shape of the legendary Triforce

Link: when I discovered my Triforce shaped birthmark… I always thought I was destined for something big…… something that would make me different……… what was I thinking?

Link now began to shed tears looking at his so called legendary birthmark

Link: I'm no hero, I'm just… I'm just a loser, like Mido always said I was… how could I ever be someone different… and… I've wanted to be in the Mask Festival… just once… before I passed on…… but I guess I'm a loser for that too!!!

Link then curled up into a ball crying his eyes out

Link: I'm pathetic!!!!

………………………………………………… you certainly are………… if your planning on giving up so easily

Link slowly tipped his head up looking around in confusion, no one was in sight

Link: (sniff) who's there?

………………… c'mon… who spent 5 years of practicing with wooden swords?

Link: huh? … well… I guess that's me… but what's-

And who made a real working bow out of only Deku Sticks and a thick wire which you spent days trying to get?

Link: that… again was me… but-

And ……who saved Saria from an army of Deku Babas using a wooden sword and a bow that shoots sharpened Deku Sticks? Who destroyed the infection inside the Great Deku Tree before it could kill him and destroy the entire forest and wipe out your race? And finally, who was brave enough to stand up to that Darknut no matter what?

Link was silent, but then he slowly stood up and changed his expression from sadness to determination

Link: me!!

Exactly! You're a hero already, even if you haven't unlocked your true powers! Only three people in the entire world gets a birthmark like yours, an those birthmarks mean you were chosen to change the world by the goddess themselves! You just haven't got round to figuring out how to use your god like powers

Link: and… how do I use them?

Heh… even I don't know… but I know one thing… Mido may be a selfish jerk who stole your time to be in the Mask Festival! But he needs you… Saria needs you… Navi needs you… everyone needs you!!! Now stop crying and get back in that fight!

Link: r-right! … but how can I defeat that Darknut!?!

……… just believe in yourself… and trust your power!

Link: wait!?! Just who are you anyway!?

… lets just say we're destined to meet… even if one of us isn't human… good luck

Back in the shrine, the Darknut was about to swing his sword at Saria and Mido who held each other in fear

Darknut: good night children!!!!

???: LEAVE THEM ALONE YOU FREAK!!!!!!!!!

The Darknut looked behind him and noticed Link was weakly standing up with his eyes closed

Navi: LINK!!!!!

Saria and Mido: LINK!!!!!!!!!!

Saria: your alive! it's a miracle!

Darknut: so you live…big mistake!

Suddenly Link opened his eyes revealing something scary, his crystal blue eyes were gone, they were just white with no irises and he was shedding blood from his eyes which struck fear into Saria and Mido, even the Darknut looked surprised

Saria: L-Link!?!?!

Suddenly Link gave out a huge battle cry as he began to glow golden. Suddenly after a huge flash of light, the blood around Link's eyes now took on the form of tribal like markings around his iris-less eyes, his tunic turned white and the Kokiri sword took on a different form, it was now a 7th sword with two blades that spiralled around each other like a double-helix and his birthmark was glowing radiantly

Darknut: WHAT'S THIS!?!?!?!

Link: come at me Darknut! Or are you just a pathetic spineless coward!!!!!

Darknut: you'll regret those words freak!!!!

The Darknut charged towards Link and he swung his sword at Link' head so hard there was a large shockwave. But Link had not budged at all, there wasn't even a wound

Darknut: IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

Just then, Link swung his new double-helix sword at the Darknut making a huge white blast sending him flying

As the Darknut stood up, his armour was cracked everywhere, then the Darknut began to bleed out a black smoke as his chest began to glow white. Suddenly the Darknut eld his head screaming in agony and then

BOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!

The Darknut exploded; the only thing that was left, was the Darknut's sword and shield.

Then suddenly another flash of light appeared around Link, as Saria and Mido looked, they noticed someone else.

It was an 8ft grown adult wearing a white tunic with grey battle armour over it, a white long pointed hat with silver hair, no irises and red and blue tribal marks around his eyes, he wore blue underneath the tunic and had metal gloves and thick brown boots. On his back was the same double-helix sword Link wielded. And in his arms was Link back in his normal state but unconscious

Saria and Mido were both amazed and scared of this being as to where he came from and how he looked like Link earlier

Saria: w-who's that!?!

Mido: no clue!!!!

The being placed Link down onto the center of the room and places the Kokiri sword in into the scabbard and onto Link's back, then he began to walk around and picked up the scattered items. The being placed the bow on Link's right side, the Gale Boomerang on his left side and interestingly, the Darknut's shield into Link's back as well to replace the destroyed Deku shield

Saria and Mido then slowly walked up to the being, feeling that they could trust him

Saria: umm… excuse me mister… but is Link going to be ok?

Being: he'll be fine. He just needs some rest, the little guys been through more than what a thousand Hyrule castle knights goes trough… oh I almost forgot

Just then, the being dug into his tunic and took out a white and light green patterned ocarina and placed it into Link's right hand. Suddenly the being began to fade away

Mido: wh-what's going on!?

Being: heh… the next time me and the boy meet, its going to be me he's going to carry

Saria and Mido were confused at this, but before they could ask what it meant, the being disappeared. Just then, all the thorny roots just turned to dust, Saria and Mido then looked excited

Saria: the roots are gone!

Mido: Kokiri Forest is safe!!

Saria and Mido then look at Link concerned

Saria: …… he's done so much… saved me from Deku Babas

Mido: saved the entire forest from an infection inside the Great Deku Tree
